Il était un Auteur compositeur interprète.
Durant sa carrière il alterne entre chansons poétiques chansons sentimentales poétiques engagées
Reconnu pour son talent de mélodiste, il met en musique et popularise nombre de poèmes de Louis Aragon.
Il a des idéaux communistes durant sa vie mais il garde sa propre liberté vis-à-vis de ça il n’hésite pas à se démarqué sur certains points.
Il se retire de la scène à 42 ans mais il reste néanmoins célèbre et est considéré comme l’un des plus grands de la chanson française.

Œuvre « Nuit et Brouillard » :

Elle est sortie en décembre 1963 il est sorti dans un album du même nom.
C’est J-F qui l’a écrit composé et interprété.
Commémorant les victimes des camps de concentrations nazis de la SGM, Nuit et brouillard évoque également pour Jean Ferrat un drame personnel et douloureux, la disparition de son père, juif émigré de Russie, arrêté puis séquestré au camp de Drancy par les autorités allemandes, avant d'être déporté (le 30 septembre 1942) à Auschwitz d'où il n'est pas revenu. Il voulait aussi rendre hommage aux victimes qui ont été déportées.
Le titre fait référence à la directive « Nuit et Brouillard » signée en 1941 par Adolf Hitler, qui ordonne que les personnes représentant une menace pour le Troisième Reich ou la Wermacht dans les territoires occupés seront transférées en Allemagne et disparaîtront dans le secret absolu.

L'heure étant à la réconciliation avec l'Allemagne, la chanson fut interdite à la radio et à la télévision où, sous l'influence directe de l'Élysée, elle fut fortement « déconseillée » par Robert Bordaz directeur de l’ORTF. Elle passa tout de même un dimanche à midi sur la première chaîne, dans l’émission Discorama de Denise Glaser. Le succès suivit, et Jean Ferrat reçut pour cette chanson le grand prix du disque de l’Académie Charles-Cros en 1963. Ce fut le début du succès pour le chanteur.
En 2005, dans un entretien accordé à la revue Nouvelles d’Arménie Magazine, le directeur de la rédaction de la revue L’Arche, Meïr Waintrater, observe que dans les paroles de la chanson l'identité juive des victimes est pratiquement invisible, et ajoute: «Pourtant, je me souviens que j’étais à l’époque très content de cette chanson et [que] ma génération l’a accueillie avec soulagement.» Ces remarques ont été reprises par d'autres sites internet 3. Jean Ferrat répond dans une lettre ouverte à Meïr Waintrater où il dit au contraire regretter « de n’avoir pas cité les autres victimes innocentes des nazis, les handicapés, les homosexuels et les Tziganes. ».
Meïr Waintrater ayant affirmé à la fin de l'interview qu'aujourd'hui « un tel texte serait attaqué pour négationnisme implicite », Ferrat répond : « Je me demande par quelle dérive de la pensée on peut en arriver là, et si vos propos ne relèvent pas simplement de la psychiatrie ». Meïr Waintrater publie alors dans L'Arche un long article4 où il écrit notamment: «Je suis d’une génération dont l’enfance fut bercée par les chansons de Ferrat.
L’absence du mot "juif" dans les paroles de la chanson ne me choquait pas ; elle n’avait pas choqué non plus les premiers spectateurs du film d’Alain Resnais Nuit et brouillard, sorti sept ans plus tôt.
Cela donne la mesure du déni où nous étions tous plongés.
Car, dans le seul cas de la France, plus des deux tiers des morts en déportation étaient des Juifs, tués pour le seul crime d’être nés juifs.
Mais cela ne se disait pas. Les fils des survivants de la Shoah ont ainsi grandi dans un silence semblable à celui qu’ont connu les fils des rescapés du génocide arménien, du génocide tutsi, du génocide cambodgien et d’autres encore. »

« Nuit et brouillard » (en allemand Nacht und Nebel, ou NN) est le nom de code des « directives sur la poursuite pour infractions contre le Reich ou contre les forces d’occupation dans les territoires occupés » (Richtlinien für die Verfolgung von Straftaten gegen das Reich oder die Besatzungsmacht in den besetzten Gebieten). Ils sont l'application d'un décret du 7 décembre 1941 signé par le maréchal Keitel et ordonnant la déportation de tous les ennemis ou opposants du troisième Reich.
En application de ce décret, toutes les personnes représentant « un danger pour la sécurité de l'armée allemande » (saboteurs, résistants, opposants ou non adhérent à la politique ou aux méthodes du Troisième Reich) seraient transférées en Allemagne et disparaîtraient à terme dans le secret absolu.

"Night and Fog" (German Nacht und Nebel, or NN) is the code name of "guidelines on prosecution for offenses against the Reich or against the occupying forces in the occupied territories" (Richtlinien für die von Verfolgung Straftaten gegen das Reich oder die in den Besatzungsmacht besetzten Gebieten). They are applying a decree of December 7, 1941 signed by Keitel and ordering the deportation of all enemies or opponents of the Third Reich.
Under this decree, all those representing "a danger to the security of the German Army" (saboteurs, strong, opponents or not adhering to the policies or methods of the Third Reich) would be transferred to Germany and eventually disappear into absolute secrecy.
